A House For Mr. Biswas | Una casa para el Sr. Biswas

One of the most interesting themes from this course was the diversity of Latin America, so I was glad to have some insight into Caribbean Indian culture in V.S. Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas. I wish we had more time to focus on Caribbean culture in class, because there is obviously a lot more to it than just one perspective.

The novel delves into several aspects of Trinidad Indian culture; one of the most interesting aspects is its take on religion. The novel was part religious satire and part love letter, much like this passage:

“So that he could learn, Jairam took him on his rounds; and wherever he went with the pundit Mr Biswas, invested with the sacred thread and all the other badges of caste, found himself, as in Tara’s house, the object of regard. It was his duty on these occasions to do the mechanical side of Jairam’s offices. He took around the brass plate with the lighted camphor; the devout dropped a coin on the plate, brushed the flame with their fingers and took their fingers to their foreheads. He took around the consecrated sweetened milk with strips of the tulsi leaf floating on its surface, and doled it out a teaspoonful at a time. When the ceremonies were over and the feeding of the Brahmins began, he was seated next to Pundit Jairam; and when Jairam had eaten and belched and asked for more and eaten again it was Mr Biswas who mixed the bicarbonate of soda for him. Afterwards Mr Biswas went to the shrine, a platform of earth decorated with flour and planted with small banana trees, and pillaged it for the coins that had been offered, hunting carefully everywhere, showing no respect for the burnt offerings or anything else. The coins, dusted with flour or earth or ash, wet with holy water or warm from the sacred fire, he took to Pundit Jairam, who might then be engaged in some philosophical disputation. Jairam would wave Mr Biswas away without looking at him. As soon as they got home, however, Jairam asked for the money, counted it, and felt Mr Biswas all over to make sure he hadn’t kept anything back” (p. 49-50)

It’s clear from first reading that Pundit Jairam is a hypocritical and somewhat comical figure and that there is plenty besides religiosity going on that the devoted don’t see. The religious satire is reflected also in the character of Hari and his disastrous blessings, the superstitions of Mr. Biswas and other characters, and the use of Hindi devotion as territory for the husbands’ rivalries.

“And when it was learned that some of the widows’ sons had killed a sheep, roasted it in the woods, and eaten it, W.C. Tuttle expressed his outrage at this un-Hindu act, refused to eat anymore from the common kitchen and made his wife cook separately. One of his sons reported that W.C. Tuttle’s brahmin mouth had burst into sores the day the sheep was eaten. Mr Biswas, though unable to produce W.C. Tuttle’s spectacular symptoms, made Shama cook separately as well.” (p. 404)

However, at the same time, the detailed way that the ceremony is described indicates some respect for it. It’s a part of the cultural tradition. Other parts of the novel have further examples as well. For instance the characters continually turn to religion to help them get through moments of suffering. A pundit’s predictions for Mr. Biswas’ life at the very beginning of the novel also shape the whole story, and are afforded the respect of mostly coming true.

The novel’s take on the Hindi religion is also an insight into Catholicism and Evangelism in other parts of Latin America. As we’ve seen in this course, religion has been a cover for corruption, colonization, genocide, and other issues. Some religious leaders who pretended or intended to be helpful caused a smallpox outbreak–a disaster somewhat like Hari’s for Mr. Biswas. Superstition is also highly common. However, at the same time, it would be more than remiss of me to devalue the entirety of religion in Latin America. The churches of Latin America have also been a source of relief for its people and an important facet of their culture. Examples such as liberation theology also show its power for social good.

No mostró respeto a cualquier cosa.

Davidson and Femicide | Sobre el feminicidio y Davidson

Uncategorized

Regina José Galindo is a Guatemalan performance artist who brings attention to humanitarian issues through her work with the body. Some of her performances include carving the word perra (bitch) into her leg to fight female oppression, beating herself once for every woman killed in the last year, or walking with a bowl of blood to create a trail of footprints symbolizing the Guatemalan genocide. While her work is often graphic, it is effective and has gained international recognition. In the case of her trail of footprints, titled ¿Quién puede borrar las huellas? (Who Can Erase the Footprints?), it actually helped to bring former dictator Ríos Montt to trial for his crimes against the Mayan people.

Clearly, Galindo’s work sends powerful messages when it is made visible. When it isn’t, however, it doesn’t work quite as well. One of Galindo’s performances, called Extensión, was designed to commemorate femicide victims. In it, she took the hair of six unidentified murdered women from a Guatemalan cemetery and made it into extensions containing the victims’ DNA. Then she and a handful of volunteers wore the hair extensions for a week to symbolically extend the womens’ lives. This performance, though powerful when it first came out, died down quickly as the extensions disappeared from public view. Only a handful of people have studied it and, when I researched it, I was only able to find three scholarly sources that mentioned it at all. So where did these extensions disappear to?

They are quietly housed in the basement of the Davidson College Visual Arts Center (VAC). In the VAC, almost nobody sees them and few realize they exist. This has to change. As we learned in Dr. Wertheimer’s guest lecture, Guatemalan femicide is a real and horrific issue.

I want Davidson to display the extensions in a permanent location. In order to do so effectively, there needs to be contextual information alongside the piece: its story, information on femicide, a link to the video of the original performance (available on YouTube) and Galindo’s website, and any further readings deemed appropriate. The question of whether campus is even an appropriate place to display this is up for debate. After all, Davidson is an American PWI, whereas Galindo and the extensions’ story are Guatemalan. Maybe it would be better to place them elsewhere on permanent loan: somewhere that they’d have more meaning. Regardless, I believe that they need to be displayed, and I urge the college to find a way to do so.

Galindo’s work is powerful. The fact that she chose to bring attention to femicide by extending the lives of its victims is beautiful. It is through showing them love and compassion that she reminds the world that these women were deserving of life––and their murder was wrong. This is much more empowering and healing than focusing on perpetrators. I believe this anti-femicide message is important. But I believe that in order to be effective, the extensions need to be seen and discussed. Because of this, I would request Davidson to address the extensions and their story in a permanent exhibit, or to put them on permanent loan to someone who will.

My Comments | Mis Comentarios

Uncategorized

For the first half of the semester, I didn’t write peer responses as frequently as I should have. I think that my comments themselves were fine, but I only wrote five and they weren’t spread out well. My first comment was on January 22nd, and then the next four were all written on January 29th, only a week later.

After midterms, I have done a much better job of writing often and spreading them out, posting one on March 21, twice on March 22, four times on April 14, and twice on April 21. Even when I didn’t write, I have consistently checked fellow students’ blogs to see what ideas they were considering and what I might be interested in engaging with.

I think my responses have been effective in the sense of being thoughtful and offering a new perspective on others’ work (rather than just saying “I agree”). Here is one example:

“One of the most interesting things you brought up was the disproportionate impact of the events and how it relates to communication. I agree completely that emotion is used as a method of communication (and often misunderstood) but I’m curious to hear your thoughts on how the level of impact also relates to language and how language relates to hegemony. I think that language and power are inextricably linked, and this movie does a fantastic job of showing that. Because of the power of America (and previously Britain), there are more English speakers. A greater effort is made to understand and speak English: for instance Amelia must learn to speak English; the bus conductor speaks English; the Americans don’t learn Arabic to help them out in their situation. In fact, they don’t need to. The Americans have access to their language when they are in crisis. And they get the closest thing to a happy ending in the movie, while characters whose communication isn’t privileged face greater suffering.” (original)

I tried to encourage discussion in a lot of my comments as well. For instance, I asked questions:

“I didn’t get to go to this lecture, so it was interesting to read about it here. The fact that Argentina had such a strong connection to Jewish migration under Pinochet, and then such a strong Nazi connection under Perón is intriguing; I’d like to explore those dynamics further. In terms of the sex work issue, I’m curious about native Argentinians’ position. It seems like Yarfitz primarily discussed different Jewish immigrant factions and their opinions, but there had to be some drive from native Argentinian’s that impacted the government’s decision to regulate working conditions rather than eliminating prostitution. As a follow up, because I was very curious, prostitution is legal in Argentina today. It is also legal in every Latin American country this source mentioned. I’m curious as to whether this is more connected to machismo or to the feminist debate cited in your post. Thoughts? (original, source)”

I suggested connections I saw between peoples’ portfolios:

“Thank you for posting about this! Machismo and femicide are things we have touched on briefly in this class, but I don’t think we’ve had an adequate sense of the very real impact that they have today. I’m glad you helped bring some more humane awareness by sharing the hashtags so people can stay informed in real time. I also appreciated hearing about the economic power that the protesting women hold! A lot of the media I see portrays Latin American women as passive and/or powerless victims, which is clearly not true. They CAN force positive changes – and they have. I think you might be interested in connecting this to Nirmal’s post on ‘Un Violador en Tu Camino‘ as well, which shows the international influence Latin American women activists have. Hopefully these high-profile protests not only bring attention to the issues Latin American women face, but also celebrate their strength and garner more international support! (original)”

And I even asked people to reply:

“This is an interesting post, particularly in the context of the opioid crisis. While I definitely agree that the drug trafficking issue is unfortunately unavoidable in a talk about US/Latin American relations, most illegal opiates actually arrive in the US via the Middle East and Asia. The US is struggling with opium more than any other drug at the moment. I sometimes wonder why we’re still so laser-focused on Latin America when we think about drug trafficking. That said, it is true that cartel leaders like Pablo Escobar had a lot of exposure and Hollywood certainly capitalized on it. I’m not sure whether that’s the only reason, or whether immigration goals or other factors play in, but I’m very curious to hear others’ thoughts, so if anyone sees this and wants to reply, please do so! (original, source).”

I got very few responses though. Knowing that discussion was something I would’ve preferred, I did try to reply to comments that people left on my website asking questions or offering something particularly insightful. I really enjoyed reading others’ comments because they allowed me to revisit my earlier thinking through fresh eyes. I found that the COVID-19 story comments were especially helpful because of the nature of the developing story.

Overall I think the lack of discussion was a class-wide issue and I wish the comments had been more helpful with that. I think if I were to retake this course, I would like to set a precedent for conversation in the comments section earlier on. As it was, I still found them helpful for revisiting and rethinking my own posts and for holding myself accountable in reading others’ blogs to stay abreast of what everyone in the course was thinking.

For a full list of comments, please see this file.

COVID-19 in Latin America

Uncategorized

This event, a virtual meeting on the economic impacts of COVID-19 in Latin America, probably taught me more than any other event I’ve attended this year. I won’t be able to fit everything into this post, so I’ll link the conversation here for interested readers.

The conversation was sobering. Two featured experts expected the global crisis to be worse than that of the 2008-2009 Great Recession, with the global economy falling by 1-3.5%.

The impact on Latin America is projected to be around the same: at least a 1.8% contraction overall, with a 10% fall in exports, an 8-25% fall in the tourism industry, and similarly high impact to the manufacturing sector. Currencies have already been devalued across the region. As of right now, remittances, which are a crucial part of many Latin American economies, have not been affected, however if this crisis is prolonged, they too will dwindle quickly. The number of people below the poverty line in Latin America is expected to about triple by the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Women are expected to face disproportionate effects because of their roles as caretakers. As schools and daycares close, women must stay home with the children, losing work and money. Because there are too few hospital beds, women will be expected to care for unwell family members, putting them at greater risk of infection.

In the wake of “Un Día Sin Mujeres,” and other protests for gender equality in Latin America, I hope that this does not undo the work that has been done! Hopefully governments across the region take the suggestions of these economists to heart and pay the women who are at-home caretakers for their work, as well as reserving priority care (and hospital beds) for female caretakers, especially those who are pregnant.

In positive news, Latin American governments started taking action relatively early. 12 have closed themselves off to foreign visitors. 8 have sealed their borders. 12 more have implemented new border controls. Chile is seeking diplomatic action to work on a multilateral regional solution. Colombia is providing free water and energy services for the duration of the crisis. Credit lines have been opened, social spending increased, and payroll extensions approved.

While the projections for Latin America are bleak due to a lack of resources and severe economic dependence, the governments of Latin America are taking earlier and more effective action than most of their “first-world” neighbors. It would do for the “first world” to get off its high horse and take inspiration from some of the more socially-conscious governments in the “forgotten continent” to the South.

“The Other Slavery”

Uncategorized

We opened the semester by learning about the Conquest of Latin America, also known as The Encounter. The arrival of Iberians to the so-called “New World” resulted in mass deaths of Native Americans from smallpox… Or did it?

In his lecture “The Other Slavery,” Andrés Reséndez remarked that we picture “neat historical boxes… Natives died, and Africans were enslaved.” In truth, however, between 2.5 and 5 million indigenous Americans were enslaved by colonizers and their descendants throughout the Americas, beginning 26 years before the first recorded smallpox case.

Gold and silver booms throughout the Americas, far larger than the famed California Gold Rush, led to this mass enslavement. When indigenous slaves died off, they left insufficient laborers for gold panning and food production, and slavers were given permits to replace them from nearby islands. This, and not smallpox, is the main reason that the Caribbean’s native population was decimated.

The famed Pueblo Revolt is another facet of Latin American history that connects to slavery. While many people have heard the story of this religious uprising, the fact that it was tied directly to slavery is unknown. Explicitly referring to enslaved native Americans, the rebels declared, “Give back the people taken!” New Mexico (then a part of Mexico) ousted its Spanish colonizers because of slavery.

I am astounded that the enslavement of millions was hidden for so long. Its concealment resulted in my mislearning of Latin American history. I wonder if other events in Latin America (and elsewhere) have been glossed over or explained away. What else on that scale could be hidden?

And what were the full effects of “the other slavery.” The majority of indigenous slaves were women and children. Women were often purchased as secondary wives! Could slavery have played a role in the growth of machismo throughout Latin America?

Uncategorized

I heard the name “Eva Perón” before I came to Davidson, but I am ashamed to say I never took the time to read a biography. In class, I learned that “Evita” was the influential wife of Juan Perón, Argentina’s longtime populist leader. Now, having learned a more about Eva Perón and her dual legacy in class, I am inspired to do a bit more research.

As she was the more charismatic and popular of the two, but also a woman who saw her role as a wife above all, her legacy is intriguing. From reading her speech for class, we saw that “Evita” was essentially the head of PR for her husband’s government. She rallied support and shepherded the country through a corruption crisis. The “Mother of Argentina” also spearheaded many reforms, while framing everything as though it was Juan’s doing. She was an avid supporter of women’s rights, such as enfranchisement, but only within the limits of the patriarchy. For instance, she was quoted as saying every woman’s aspiration should be marriage. This dual legacy is hard to reconcile.

Conducting additional research, I found that her legacy is even more complex. While some have attempted to canonize Evita for her support of the destitute and downtrodden (Britannica), others have called her legacy ‘horrid’ and claimed she was a Nazi sympathizer (Washington Post). Her husband unquestionably idolized both Hitler and Mussolini (Washington Post). She may have been ignorant of the wealth flowing into her country from escaped Nazis granted safe harbor in Argentina, but there is nothing to prove she did not know (Washington Post).

In the end, I cannot reconcile Evita’s conflicted legacies. I suppose that is the danger of idolizing any human. I am reminded of what my friend’s mother once said: “All your favorites are problematic.” Like Argentina, I remember Evita’s successes, but I learn just as much from critiquing her flaws. All I can do is recognize that she was quite progressive for her time and simultaneously imperfect.

Interdisciplinarity

As a freshman, I don’t have many previous courses to write about. However, there are two classes which I think connect to this one: Humanities (Humes), and Human Rights in Latin America.

Human Rights in Latin America shared a lot of subject matter with LAS 101. In that class, we studied the dictatorships and revolutions of the 20th century with a focus on the atrocities in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. We also looked at contemporary issues of environmental justice across the continent. That course complemented this one because it added depth to some of the broad lessons we learn in LAS 101, such as Guatemala’s 1954 coup. And in this course, we are studying Brazil, Cuba, and Trinidad and other countries that my previous class did not cover. In that sense, the pairing of these courses is useful to my personal goal of learning specifics. While Human Rights in Latin America showed me that I do not identify with anthropology, it helped me recognize my passions for history and language.

Humes is an example of interdisciplinarity. In Humes eight professors spanning eight “disciplines” each teach a unit on Revolution. Much of that course was spent deconstructing the way we divide school into distinct academic departments. This idea of “disciplines” is a relatively recent one. Diderot’s Encyclopedia of Knowledge characterized religion, writing, and magic under the category of science – it wasn’t until later that they became distinct disciplines. I prefer interdisciplinary classes. In my view no thorough course can fall entirely into one subject area. If you want to learn about coffee, you have to learn the chemistry of caffeine, the history of coffee’s discovery, the geography of where it grows, the anthropology of its effects on a population, the economics of the coffee trade, etcetera. Humes is interdisciplinary in the very broad sense of bringing many professors into conversation. LAS 101 is closer to my ideal of interdisciplinarity: in order to more thoroughly understand Latin America, we must learn a mix of economics, history, social science, language, art, culture, etcetera, instead of splitting them all into separate classes.

Initial Conceptions of Latin America

Uncategorized

I first studied Latin America in my middle school Spanish class with the movie La Misma Luna. Since then, I have spent seven years studying the culture, art, food, history, and current events in the region. Coming into this course, my first instinct is to say that I don’t know what Latin America’s essential characteristics are; it’s almost impossible for me to describe it without generalizing, which I really want to avoid. Some Latin Americans––but not all––speak Spanish. Some––but not all––were colonized together and gained their independence during the same era. I know that there are many common threads of mestizaje and indigenous culture, United States interference, 20th century violence, agriculture, Jesuit Catholicism, and more, but none of these completely describes what Latin America is.

My three most recent encounters with Latin America were incredible but stereotypical. First was my summer abroad in Mexico, where I practiced my Spanish, ate mole, taught English, and took touristy trips to the ruins of Xochicalco. Next was my internship at a pro-bono immigration law firm where I listened to story after story of violence and dangerous border crossings. Last semester, I took a Human Rights in Latin America course, which focused primarily on the 20th century violence in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Argentina. All of those experiences explored the nuances between countries, but, in the end, all of them forced me to generalize.

I know that this course will teach an overview of the region as well, and I aim to learn it so that I can answer this question with less fear in the future. However, my personal goal for this course is to un-generalize the region. By noting specific anecdotes; leaders; and geographical, cultural, or historical nuances, I hope to better understand some of the differences between countries. I plan to center my final research paper on an event or cultural phenomenon specific to one country that I know little about.
